A lawsuit was filed against Sur Co-Mayor Cemal Özdemir with a claim of imprisonment for up to 36 years, after Özdemir was dismissed on December 21, 2019 and was arrested two days later. The indictment, accepted by Diyarbakır 8th Assize Court, charges Özdemir due to his membership in Mesopotamian Association of Assistance and Solidarity for Families with Lost Relatives (MEYA-DER) as well as his participation in 22 events, including statements, commemorations, funerals, congresses and electoral work. It was further asserted that Özdemir has made “illegal organisation propaganda” with three social media posts he made on Twitter and Facebook between the years 2013 and 2019.
