Turkish Criminal Law Association and Istanbul Bar Association’s Human Rights Center organised a symposium on “Current Events on Freedom of Expression Within Turkish Criminal Law.” In the first session of the symposium, Prof. Dr. Yaman Akdeniz, Atty. Özgür Urfa, Istanbul Bilgi University Research Member Aras Türay made presentations within “social media and freedom of expression.”
Prof. Dr. Akdeniz indicated that statistics on access bans since 2009 were not published in Turkey and that 300 thousand websites and URLs are banned by today. Lawyer Urfa, on the other hand, pointed out the investigations against social media users against the operation in Syria, stating that investigations were opened against 278 anti-war tweets. Urfa indicated that 30 thousand accounts are being examined per day through a software specially developed by the “online patrol” units, and that lawsuits are being filed through this unlawful collection of evidence.
