The Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office filed a case against 19 members of the People’s Liberation Party who protested NATO in front of the First Parliament building on 5 July. Prosecutors charged all 19 with “participating unarmed in an unlawful meeting and march and failing to disperse despite warnings,” and additionally charged four with “resisting to prevent an official from performing duties.” The indictment said the HKP called people to gather through its social media accounts despite an action ban imposed by the Ankara Governor’s Office ahead of the NATO Summit. Prosecutors rejected the suspects’ defense that they were exercising democratic rights, citing video footage and police reports, and sought their punishment.
