Four fishermen who opposed the Günvak 1 and Günvak 2 cage aquaculture projects carried out by Kuzuoğlu Group off Zelek Port in the Pazar district of Rize were detained by the gendarmerie. Hacer Kanbay, Ahmet Tafralı, İbrahim Oğuz, and Muhammet Yağcı were detained as the company’s cage equipment was being brought to the port. Local fishermen had been opposing the projects for about two years. They had begun a vigil after the company resumed placing cages offshore despite an earlier commitment that the project would be abandoned. Yeni Parti Rize MP Tahsin Ocaklı criticized the detentions, while İHD Rize Representative Günay Karafazlı was initially prevented by the gendarmerie from entering the port.
