Former Managing Editor of Özgür Gündem newspaper, which was shut down with an emergency decree, Reyhan Çapan was taken into custody and was arrested due to the definitive imprisonment sentence against her.
Istanbul 17th Assize Court sentenced Çapan to 1 year and three months of imprisonment with the allegation of ‘making illegal organization propaganda’ during the time she was the managing editor at Özgür Gündem. On the other hand, she stated that the penalty fines sentenced against her in different cases were turned into imprisonment sentences as well. Following the approval of Istanbul Regional Administrative court, a warrant was issued against Çapan and she was arrested by the court she was taken to in Hopa, Artvin.
Çapan is also on trial in the case filed at Istanbul 14th High Criminal Court against Özgür Gündem writers and executives. In the latest hearing of the cast on May 7, the prosecutor claimed the three people, including Çapan, to be sentenced with imprisonment with the allegation that they are making “consecutive illegal organization propaganda.”
