Ankara 86th Criminal Court of First Instance accepted the indictment against Enes Hocaoğulları, a youth delegate to the Council of Europe and human rights defender. Hocaoğulları will appear before the judge for the first time on September 8.

In his speech in Strasbourg on March 27, Hocaoğulları had raised the issue of police violence during the protests that started after Ekrem İmamoğlu’s arrest. She was arrested on August 5 on charges of “disseminating misleading information” and “inciting the public to hatred and hostility”.

In the indictment, the prosecutor’s office claimed that Hocaoğulları’s remarks had divided society and targeted the country’s reputation. Her lawyer Mahmut Şeren argued that the speech was within the scope of freedom of expression and should be acquitted. Şeren also emphasized that the reports of the Bar Association and human rights organizations on the unlawful practices of the police during the protests were ignored.

Hodjaoğulları’s first hearing will be held on September 8 at 11.55 am.
