Journalist Abdullah Kaya was sentenced to 1 year and 3 months in prison for sharing a song sung by artist Ayfer Düztaş for Leyla Güven on social media. The photo of Sakine Cansız in the post was deemed as “illegal organization propaganda” by the court.
Kaya was not present at the hearing held at Ağrı 2nd High Criminal Court, while her lawyer Zülfü Polat argued that the post in question should be considered within the scope of freedom of expression. The court decided to defer the announcement of the verdict (HAGB). With this decision, Kaya’s sentence will not be recorded on his criminal record unless he commits a similar offense within 5 years.
Journalist Kaya had previously been tried and arrested for his journalistic activities and social media posts. It is known that many lawsuits have been filed against him.
