Dicle Fırat Journalists Association (DFG) published its report on rights violations against journalists in June. The report stated that June was a period in which systematic attacks on freedom of expression intensified.

According to the report, 16 journalists were detained and 6 were arrested. Among those arrested are Bianet editor Tuğçe Yılmaz, four journalists arrested for sending copyrighted news abroad and Fatih Altaylı, who was threatened by AKP’s Oktay Saral. Thus, the number of imprisoned journalists rose to 34.

The police raid on Leman Magazine and the detention of four employees under torture were also included in the report. DFG evaluated the attack as part of a systematic violation of freedom of thought and expression.

The report also stated that 9 journalists were investigated, 13 journalists were prosecuted, journalist Zilan Gül was sentenced to 2 years and 1 month in prison, and journalists were threatened, ill-treated, dismissed and had their social rights violated.

“We will continue to defend journalism and be a pioneer in building a democratic society,” the DFG said in a statement.
