Press professional organizations made a joint statement for T24 reporter Can Öztürk, who was beaten and detained while covering the protests at Boğaziçi University. The statement emphasized that journalism is not a crime and demanded Öztürk’s immediate release.

The statement signed by the Press Council, DİSK Basın-İş, Contemporary Journalists Association, Journalists’ Association, Izmir Journalists’ Association, KESK Haber-Sen, Media and Law Studies Association and Journalists’ Union of Turkey stated that Öztürk’s press card was broken, his throat was squeezed and he was detained in handcuffs.

While 82 detainees were released, Can Öztürk, along with 14 other students, was referred to court for arrest.

The protests were organized in response to the “Islamic Sciences: For Whom, For How Much?” against the invitation of the theologian Nureddin Yıldız, known for his statements on underage marriage and misogyny, as a speaker at the university.
