The decision of no prosecution regarding the attack on Halk TV while broadcasting live during the Marmaris fires in 2021 has been finalized. The journalists’ objection was also rejected.

On the night of August 6, 2021, during Halk TV’s live broadcast in the town of İçmeler, Gökmen Karadağ, İsmail Saymaz, Murat Ağırel, Marmaris Mayor Mehmet Oktay and lawyer Salim Şen were attacked during the ‘Açıkça’ program. The group approached the broadcast with verbal abuse and then physically attacked. Then Halk TV Program Coordinator Candan Yıldız and other journalists tried to prevent the attack.

It was announced that Sertan Yüce, a member of the AKP Marmaris District Organization, was among the attackers. Mert Topaloğlu, Bilal Topaloğlu, Şeyhmus Urebe, Sertan Yüce and Fatih Çoban were detained but all were released. The Marmaris Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office ruled on March 18 that there was no grounds for prosecution. The journalists’ appeal against this decision was rejected by the Muğla 1st Criminal Judgeship of Peace on April 17.

The verdict stated that ‘all the evidence was collected and there was no error in the verdict’.
