1st Criminal Chamber of the Court of Cassation has unanimously approved the 4-year 2-month imprisonment sentence issued against the defendant police officer due to “homicide with eventual intent” in the case of death of Cem Aygün, who was shot dead from the back due to not abiding by the ‘stop’ warning of the police in Ankara. With the approval, defendant police officer Fatih Yılmaz will continue his duty.
Police officer Fatih Yılmaz had shot Cem Aygün in the back in 2012 due to not abiding by the “stop” warning. Even though Aygün wouldn’t be able to run away after falling on the floor, Yılmaz had shot him once again. The defendant police officer has been arrested within the case and was sentenced to 11 years and 8 months of imprisonment. However, the verdict was reversed by the Court of Cassation due to “homicide with eventual intent.”
