Two defendants, who were on trial with the allegation of “insulting the memory of Atatürk” with their Facebook posts, were sentenced to 1 year and three months of imprisonment each. The announcement of the verdicts was deferred.
In its reasoned verdict, Istanbul Anatolian 58th Criminal Court of First Instance defended that the related posts exceeded limits of opinion expression and the freedom to spread it, as well as limits of criticism. The verdict further claimed that the content degrades honour and reputation. According to the record, the sentences were increased since the act was performed on the Internet media in a way more than two people can read it.
