Bilkent University students protested the appointment of a trustee to the CHP Istanbul Provincial Directorate with a demonstration on the day of orientation. In their statement, the students characterized this practice as “an open coup against the right to be elected”.
The demonstration pointed out that the government’s oppressive policies have spread to all segments of society and emphasized that the demand for free, scientific and democratic education will be defended.
It was reported that some student clubs who hung banners on their stands in solidarity were subjected to pressure and threats by security guards. The security guards visited the clubs one by one and asked them to take down the banners and threatened, “If you participate in the protests, your club will be shut down.”
The students stated that they will not back down against the repression and demanded the release of all detainees.
