Scientists and academics, including world-renowned names like Noam Chomsky, Shaila Benhabib, Steven Pinker, Judith Butler, Bruce Alberts, reprimanded the prosecutions against “Peace Academics” in Turkey. The petition campaign, started with the indication that the situation of Prof. Füsun Üstel with an approved imprisonment sentence against her for 15 months is a new strike against freedom of expression and academic freedoms, was signed by 1800 people.

The petition text was addressed at Turkish authorities and called the international academic community to stop academic collaborations with institutions and universities targeting academic freedom in Turkey. The text was supported by PEN International, PEN America, Columbia University’s Global Freedom of Expression, Article 19, National Writers Union – UAW Local 1981/AFL-CIO, Research Institute on Turkey, Academic Solidarity Network, Forum Transregionale Studien, Academics for Peace – North America, Academics for Peace – United Kingdom, California Scholars for Academic Freedom, English PEN and Dansk PEN.
