The Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office prepared an indictment against journalist Ali Tarakcı over a 23 September 2026 post on his X account saying, “A very important minister will resign on Friday,” charging him with “publicly disseminating misleading information.” Prosecutors said the post had been viewed about 5.2 million times, caused public panic and negatively affected the foreign exchange market, and sought a prison sentence of between one and three years. The indictment stated that the Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye reported net sales of about $6.24 billion by the end of the day in transactions that began three minutes after the post. Tarakcı admitted making the post but said he had not directly referred to any minister, had combined rumors into backstage information and could not have foreseen the economic consequences. He denied the charges. Prosecutors sought punishment under Article 217/A of the Turkish Penal Code and security measures under Article 53.
