Zafer Party Chairman Ümit Özdağ, who is on trial for allegedly insulting Ali Erbaş, Head of Religious Affairs, was asked for up to 2 years in prison and a political ban. Özdağ had criticized the fact that Atatürk was not recited the Fatiha in the Friday sermon. The prosecutor stated that Özdağ’s social media posts were not within the scope of freedom of expression and demanded a penalty. Erbaş’s lawyer said they agreed with the prosecutor’s opinion and drew attention to the organized insult campaign. Özdağ’s lawyers asked for more time, case adjourned until October 30.
