JINNEWS reporter Melike Aydın and MA reporter Tolga Güney, who were on trial for “membership in an illegal organization”, were acquitted. MA reporter Delal Akyüz was sentenced to 6 years and 3 months in prison for “membership in an illegal organization”.
During the hearing held at Bayraklı Courthouse 13th High Criminal Court, journalists’ lawyers emphasized that the evidence consisted of news content and that the charges violated freedom of expression. The court acquitted Aydın and Güney, while sentencing Akyüz on the grounds that there is an open file on the charge of “aiding an illegal organization”. Appeal against the decision left open.
