Following the launch of an investigation against journalist Merdan Yanardağ on charges of “espionage”, the SDIF was appointed as a trustee to TELE1 by a decision of the Istanbul Criminal Judicature of Peace. Yanardağ was detained in the morning and his house and office were searched. The trustee committee arrived at the channel during the evening main news broadcast and the broadcast was switched to a tape broadcast. The decision was criticized by political parties and journalists’ organizations as an interference in press freedom.
