Pekay Salmanoğlu, a lawyer from the Istanbul Bar Association, was detained on February 9 following an argument with a judge during a court proceeding at the Küçükçekmece Courthouse. The police held Salmanoğlu in custody for approximately 20 hours and brought him back to the courthouse on the morning of February 10. Following his statement to the prosecutor’s office, the Criminal Court of Peace decided to release Salmanoğlu, imposing a measure prohibiting him from leaving the country. Ibrahim Kaboğlu, President of the Istanbul Bar Association, said that Salmanoğlu’s detention while on duty was contrary to the Constitution and the Bar Association Law. The Istanbul Bar Association reacted to the decision, reminding that, in accordance with Article 58 of the Bar Association Law, investigations against lawyers are subject to the permission of the Ministry of Justice.
