Transgender activist Janset Kalan was sentenced to five months in prison and a 400 TL fine for a photo showing her legs and cleavage on a social media account that did not belong to her. The Ankara 48th Criminal Court of First Instance issued the ruling under the charge of “indecency” and postponed the announcement of the sentence. Kalan said that on the same day, she saw another trans woman being tried on the same charge and that there were more than 100 cases opened against trans women in Ankara alone. Kalan said the ruling defined the crime based on the female body and that the process was political. Her lawyer, Nergiz Görnaz, said the virtual patrol application systematically targeted trans women and that the investigations were conducted with irregularities. She said they would appeal Kalan’s case.
