The İzmir Branch of the Human Rights Association held a press conference on allegations that Tanju Yıldırım, who was held at Menemen T-Type Prison, had been subjected to ill-treatment in police custody and in prison. Yıldırım’s brother, Ömer Yıldırım, alleged that his brother was detained in Menemen on 23 July and subjected to physical and psychological violence during the two days he was held at Asarlık Police Station. Yıldırım said there were signs of assault on his brother’s body and that he requested a medical report documenting the assault at the hospital. He also said Tanju Yıldırım was placed in a solitary cell after being sent to Menemen T-Type Prison and was prevented from accessing television, radio and books. The İzmir Branch of the Human Rights Association said it had filed official applications concerning the allegations and called for prison conditions to be brought into line with human dignity.
