Özcan Aksu, who was detained and arrested on 22 June, died on 5 July in the hospital to which he was taken after being held at Marmara Penal Institution. His sister, Melek Aksu, said that during a prison visit on 26 June she saw severe signs of assault on her brother’s face and body, that he appeared confused and did not recognize her. Aksu alleged that when she asked her brother who had beaten him, he pointed to the prison guards. The family said they also saw bruises, fractures and wounds at the funeral and called for an investigation into whether Özcan Aksu had been tortured in prison and why medical treatment had been delayed.
