The first hearing of the trial in which Ekrem İmamoğlu, who was removed from his position as Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, is being prosecuted on charges of “insult” was held on February 27 at the Bakırköy 33rd Criminal Court of First Instance. The prosecution requested a prison sentence of between 3 months and 15 days and 2 years and 4 months for İmamoğlu, as well as a political ban under Article 53 of the Turkish Criminal Code, for his remarks directed at the complainant Serkan Şahin at an exhibition held in Bakırköy on October 26, 2024. Imamoğlu’s lawyer, Kemal Polat, stated that the offense was subject to a fine, that the fine had been paid, and requested that the case be dismissed. The prosecutor stated that the payment had been made on time and requested that the public case be dismissed. The court postponed the hearing to March 5, 2026, due to the complainant’s lawyer’s excuse.
