The appeal against the detention of 16-year-old A.K., who was arrested on charges of “making organization propaganda” due to a hair braiding video she shared on her social media account in Izmir, was rejected by the Izmir 5th Criminal Court of Peace. The Izmir 39th Criminal Court of First Instance stated that judicial control measures would be insufficient, citing the current evidence and the minimum and maximum penalties for the crime. Lawyer Edhem Kuruş emphasized that detention is an exceptional measure in juvenile trials and announced that an individual application would be made to the Constitutional Court on the grounds that the decision constituted a violation of fundamental rights.
