Urban planner Tayfun Kahraman, who has been held in prison for 43 months as part of the Gezi Park trial and suffers from multiple sclerosis (MS), was transferred to Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty on January 2 due to an MS attack. Kahraman’s lawyer, Cansu Çiftçi, stated that treatment would begin the following day and that the pain persisted. Kahraman’s wife, Meriç Demir Kahraman, reacted to his continued detention despite the Constitutional Court ruling, saying that prison conditions were causing his illness to progress. CHP Deputy Chairman Sezgin Tanrıkulu also stated that Kahraman’s continued detention in prison had now become a clear threat to his right to life.
