Syrian activist Taha Elgazi, known for his work on refugee rights in Turkey, was detained along with his wife by plainclothes police officers in Istanbul. Elgazi’s family and lawyer said they have no information on the reason for his detention or where he is being held.
Five plainclothes officers came to his home last night and took Elgazi and his wife on the grounds of “address confirmation” and transferred them to a repatriation center. No official notification was made as to where Elgazi was taken.
Family members and his lawyer said that they had not received any information despite contacting the Küçükçekmece İkitelli Police Station and the Istanbul Security Directorate. Elgazi, whose phone could be reached for a short time at night, said in a WhatsApp correspondence that a “G-207 administrative restriction code” was applied to him.
