The Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) imposed administrative fines on TELE1, Sözcü TV, Halk TV, Meltem TV and SUN TV for “violating broadcasting principles”. In the decision, it was argued that the dose of criticism against the public authority in the broadcast content of the channels “harmed social sensitivities”. Reacting to RTÜK’s decision, media professional organizations stated that these practices are “part of a systematic crackdown on press freedom”.
