As part of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on November 25, the Istanbul Governor’s Office imposed transportation restrictions around Taksim Square in response to the call for action by the November 25 Women’s Platform. Metro Istanbul announced that the Taksim station and the Funicular line would be closed, and that the Istiklal exit at Şişhane would be out of service. Despite the governorate’s ban and barricade decision, women’s organizations announced that they would meet at the Tunnel at 7:30 p.m. The symbolism of November 25 stems from the brutal murder of the Mirabal Sisters, who fought against the Trujillo dictatorship in the Dominican Republic in 1960. This date was first recognized in Latin America and then, in 1999, by a United Nations resolution, as the “International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women” worldwide.
