The Human Rights Association issued a statement on February 13 calling for the acceptance of a request to postpone the execution of Hatice Onaran, who is being held at Gebze Women’s Closed Prison. The Istanbul 13th Heavy Penal Court sentenced Onaran to 4 years and 2 months in prison on charges of “Violation of the Law on the Prevention of Terrorism Financing.” The court cited Onaran’s deposits of between 200 and 450 TL to sick and poor prisoners as grounds for the ruling. The association stated that the money deposited was spent under the supervision of the prison administration and that the action was within the scope of humanitarian solidarity. The IHD announced that Onaran, who has a history of colon cancer and a 79 percent disability report, was in poor health, that new lesions were detected in a PET scan, and that he began chemotherapy on February 10, 2026. The association reported that Onaran was kept in handcuffs during his transfer to the hospital and treatment process and that his privacy was violated. The IHD demanded Onaran’s release in accordance with the provisions of the European Convention on Human Rights regarding the right to life and the prohibition of ill-treatment.
