International human rights organisation Freemuse published its report “The State of Artistic Freedom 2026” covering the year 2025. The report found that amid wars, authoritarianism and democratic backsliding, censorship, repression and self-censorship in the arts and culture sector had become systematic in many countries. Turkey was listed among countries where artistic freedom is subject to systematic censorship. Freemuse noted that artists nonetheless responded by building solidarity networks and developing new methods of resistance.
