The police intervened the commemoration event planned to be organized in Kadıköy on the 52nd anniversary of İbrahim Kaypakkaya’s death. Youth organizations marching to the commemoration planned to be held in front of Süreyya Opera House were prevented by the police during the march and many people were detained.

The event, which was attended by groups such as New Democratic Youth (YDG), HDK Youth Assembly, Socialist Youth Movement (SGH), Istanbul Free Student Assembly, DEM Party Youth Assembly and Revolutionary Student Union (DÖB), started at Antikacılar Street. The police intervened harshly against the youth who marched with the slogan “This steel will not forget the water it took”.

The detained youth reacted with slogans such as “Our leader İbrahim Kaypakkaya”, “May martyrs are immortal”, “Don’t forget May 18th, don’t make us forget” and “Haki Karer is alive, the struggle is growing”. Members of the press who were following the commemoration were also removed from the area by the police.

Youth organizations reacted to the police intervention and detentions and condemned the prevention of their right to commemoration.
