Journalist and academic Nuray Mert was acquitted in the first hearing of her trial on charges of “membership in a terrorist organization”. During the hearing held at Istanbul 25th High Criminal Court, the prosecutor demanded Mert’s acquittal. The court accepted this request and acquitted Mert and lifted the ban on her leaving the country.

The case was filed on the grounds of a photograph taken in Syria in 2014. In his defense, Mert stated that the photo was taken as part of his journalistic activity and added, “I am an academic and columnist. That is why I was there.”

The court concluded the case with an acquittal.
