Writer Nur Betül Aras and political scientist Abdullah Esin were arrested in the operations launched against social media users following the appointment of a trustee to the CHP Istanbul Provincial Directorate.
The General Directorate of Security announced that it had initiated action against accounts that were evaluated to have made provocative posts on social media within the scope of the crimes of “inciting the public to hatred and hostility” and “incitement to commit crimes”. Many social media users were detained in house raids.
Nur Betül Aras was sent to Silivri Prison and Abdullah Esin was sent to Metris Prison. Her lawyer Şeyma Eren stated that Aras was most worried about being separated from her daughter and said that the arrest was politically motivated.
In addition to Aras and Esin, the detainees included Emrah Gülsunar and Ebru Uzun Oruç, who goes by the pen name “Street Cat”. Gülsunar and Oruç were released on judicial control conditions.
