A new lawsuit was filed against Nurullah Efe, former chairman of the People’s Liberation Party (HKP), on charges of “insulting the President” based on his defense in the “insulting the President” case.
In 2014, the HKP applied to the ICC against Erdoğan and some officials in the MIT TIRs case, after which an “insult” lawsuit was filed against Efe. During this process, Efe was first sentenced to 1 year, 2 months and 22 days in prison and then to 1 year, 5 months and 15 days in prison by the Court of Cassation.
Upon the finalization of the sentence, the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Court of Cassation announced that Efe’s party membership and executive position had been revoked.
The new case was filed due to the expressions Efe used in his defense on October 18, 2023, such as “criminal organization”, “selling the homeland” and “fugitive palace”. The indictment claimed that these words exceeded the limits of criticism and targeted the honor and reputation of the President.
Efe will appear before the Ankara 32nd Criminal Court of First Instance on September 9 with a prison sentence of up to 4 years and 8 months.
