The indictment prepared by the Büyükçekmece Prosecutor’s Office regarding the death of journalist Hakan Tosun, who was beaten to death in Esenyurt on October 10, 2025, was made public on February 23, 2026. Tosun’s lawyers reacted to the indictment’s assessment of the incident as “causing death by injury” rather than “intentional killing” and to the request for a reduction in sentence due to unjust provocation. Lawyer Cemal Yücel stated that if the indictment were to become an indictment in this form, the two defendants in custody could be released after approximately 2.5 years, and announced that they would appeal the decision.
