A case has been filed against 17 young members of the Turkish Workers’ Party, 16 of whom are in custody, who were arrested for protesting the MESEM application and child deaths at the Vocational and Technical Education Summit attended by Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin. The Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office charged the youths with “resisting to prevent the performance of duty” and “simple assault with a weapon”; the indictment described the red paint used during the protest as a “weapon.” The prosecution sought prison sentences ranging from 1 year to 6 years and 11 months to 3 years and 11 months for the youths. The indictment was sent to the Bakırköy 33rd Criminal Court of First Instance.
