The court announced its reasoned decision in the case against journalist Derya Ren on charges of “insult”. The verdict stated that Ren’s remarks were not “insulting”, but expressions that were not polite but should be evaluated within the scope of freedom of expression. Ren was detained by police officers on January 7 while following a news report on the murder of a woman in Nizip district of Antep, and a lawsuit was filed against him after an argument. Acquitted on June 24, Ren’s remarks were described as “rude and disturbing” by the court, but were not considered a criminal offense of insult.
