Although July 24 is commemorated as “Press Day” in Turkey, especially for women journalists and the Kurdish press, this date marks a day of struggle and confrontation. As Jinnews reports, censorship continues, only in different forms; newspapers are shut down, journalists are arrested, news websites are blocked. Women journalists keep the tradition of free press alive against the masculine media and state oppression. According to MKG Board Member Arjin Dilek Öncel, 118 journalists were detained and 26 were arrested in 2024. Stating that censorship is legitimized by laws, Öncel said, “If there is hope for peace, the press must first be freed from oppression.”
