Journalist Nizamettin Yılmaz, an employee of the Azadiya Welat newspaper, which was shut down by a decree law, died in a hospital in Greece where he was being treated for cancer. His body will be buried in Mardin’s Derik district on July 17. Yılmaz was detained and arrested in Derik in 2018 and released in 2019. In prison, he was suffering from COPD and lung cancer and went on hunger strike for 87 days against the isolation of Abdullah Öcalan. After 6 years and 3 months in prison, he had to leave for Greece.
