Journalist and documentary filmmaker Gökhan Mezarcı was detained at the Ankara Courthouse on December 27 while following up on a statement by animal rights activists regarding their application to the United Nations for the repeal of Law No. 7527 on the Protection of Animals. Police detained Mezarcı on allegations of “insulting a public official.” Mezarcı, who was referred to court with a request for arrest, was released on judicial control conditions.
