Journalist Furkan Karabay was acquitted of three charges in the case against him for his news reports on the investigation into Esenyurt Mayor Ahmet Özer. However, he was sentenced to 42,500 TL judicial fine for insulting Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor Akın Gürlek. The court deferred the announcement of the verdict. Karabay’s lawyers criticized the verdict, stating that it was copy-pasted from the indictment. In his defense, Karabay said, “Decisions made in political cases have no validity.” Karabay, who is currently under arrest from another case, faces up to 15 years in prison for his news and social media posts.
