T24 reporter Asuman Aranca was sentenced to 1 year in prison on charges of “violation of confidentiality” for reporting the expert report on Sinan Ateş’s murder. The court reduced the sentence to 10 months with a good behavior discount and deferred the announcement of the verdict. In his defense, Aranca stated that the news article was in the public interest and that there was no violation of confidentiality. His lawyer Mustafa Gökhan Tekşen demanded acquittal, saying, “How journalism is practiced cannot be at the discretion of the prosecutor’s office.” The story won three journalism awards.
