An indictment was prepared against two tourists for inappropriate behavior in the courtyard of the Grand Çamlıca Mosque in Üsküdar, Istanbul.
On August 26, the Anatolian Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation after the images spread on social media. K.Z. and S.S., who were identified as Russian citizens, were detained. Giving a statement, K.Z. said that he did not know that his behavior was a crime in Turkey, apologized and regretted it.
The prosecutor’s office demanded a prison sentence of 6 months to 1 year for the two tourists on the charge of “publicly insulting religious values adopted by a section of the public”. The indictment was accepted by the court.
