IHD Istanbul Branch sent a letter to the Ministry of Justice for the release of its member Hatice Onaran. Onaran was sentenced to prison on charges of “financing an illegal organization” for sending money to prisoners and has been held in Gebze Women’s Closed Prison since October 10, 2024.
In the statement made in front of the association building, the slogans “Hatice Onaran is not alone” and “Release sick prisoners” were chanted. Meral Nergis Şahin, a member of IHD, stated that the prison administrations accepted that the money sent by Onaran was spent on personal needs through legal procedures and said, “The terror financing justification is being turned into a tool of pressure on rights defenders.”
In a letter to the Ministry, İHD demanded the release of Onaran and prisoners in similar situations.
