International journalism organizations reacted to RTÜK’s 10-day broadcasting ban imposed on Sözcü TV for broadcasting protests following the arrest of Ekrem İmamoğlu. EFJ described the decision as “disproportionate censorship”, while IPI said it was aimed at silencing critical voices. RSF called on the authorities to stop attacks on press freedom. Sözcü TV’s broadcasting was suspended on July 9, a decision that was seen as unprecedented censorship in Turkey’s media history. RTÜK also imposed additional fines and program suspensions for Murat Kubilay’s remarks.
