The Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation into former Future Party Chair Ahmet Davutoğlu on a charge of “insulting the President.” Prosecutors examined a video recirculated on social media of a speech Davutoğlu gave in Genç, Bingöl, in September 2021. An investigation was opened under Article 299 of the Turkish Penal Code and Davutoğlu was scheduled to give a statement as a suspect at the Ankara Courthouse on 7 September. Davutoğlu’s lawyer Hasan Seymen said the remarks under investigation were part of responses to accusations made by a person in 2021.
