The 9-year, 8-month and 20-day imprisonment sentence issued against Republican People’s Party (CHP) Istanbul Provincial Chair Canan Kaftancıoğlu was approved by the 2nd Criminal Chamber of Istanbul Regional Court. Kaftancıoğlu’s lawyers announced that they will apply to the Court of Cassation.
The indictment, which was accepted by Istanbul 37th Assize Court, had charged Kaftancıoğlu with ‘insulting the President’, ‘insulting a public officer because of his duty,’ ‘public denigration of the Republic of Turkey’, ‘public incitement towards resentment and hostility’ and ‘making terrorist organisation propaganda’ with a claim of imprisonment for up to 17 years.
