Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu was acquitted of the charge of “targeting people who took part in the fight against terrorism” in the lawsuit filed against Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor Akın Gürlek. However, he was sentenced to 1 year, 5 months and 15 days in prison for “publicly insulting a public official because of his duty” and 2 months and 15 days in prison for “threatening”. If the sentence is upheld, a “political ban” will be imposed in accordance with Article 53 of the Turkish Penal Code. Imamoğlu, who had a tension with the prosecutor at the hearing, said, “I am a threat to only 1 person in this paradise country. That is the person I defeated 4 times in the ballot box.”
