The investigation into “political espionage” against Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, communications advisor Necati Özkan, Hüseyin Gün, and journalist Merdan Yanardağ has been completed. The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has filed a public lawsuit against the four individuals under Article 328 of the Turkish Penal Code. The indictment seeks prison sentences ranging from 15 to 20 years for the defendants. The Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office alleged that foreign intelligence services were contacted during the 2019 election process and that attempts were made to manipulate the elections. It was reported that the investigation was expanded based on statements made by Hüseyin Gün under the scope of effective repentance.
