HRW statement on Gezi Park indictment: “Drop false accusations on coup attempt”

Human Rights Watch (HRW) made a statement on the indictment prepared six years after the Gezi Park protests and was accepted by Istanbul 30th Assize Court. The organization indicated that the Turkish President and the government must end false accusations and that the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office must drop all charges against 16 people, including Osman Kavala, which consider the Gezi Park protests as a coup attempt.

HRW General Director Kenneth Roth indicated that the case file was prepared completely with political motives, saying, “Attempting to describe the Gezi Park protests as a coup attempt that was financed by outside sources and organized by Kavala is nothing more than an attempt aiming to rewrite history and damaging the independent civil society in Turkey through false accusations.”
